ABACUS TRAINING IN MARCH AND APRIL

Technical Training Courses will be run by Abacus Organic Associates at Myerscough College on the following dates:
Thursday 17th March Soils
Thursday 24th March Rotations
Thursday 31st March Manure Mgt & Nutrient Budgeting
Thursday 7th April Weed, Pest and Disease Mgt
Thursday 14th April Livestock Health
Thursday 21st April Livestock Feeding

The Technical Training course consists of 6 days at weekly intervals with a different subject each day. While you can pick and choose which days you attend, depending on your mix of enterprises, we do strongly recommend that you attend as many days as possible to get the most out of the course. Many of those who only book for one or two days usually finish up attending more.

There are two unique features of the course. The first is that we highlight the relationship between the various aspects and principles of organic husbandry. For example, we look at how soil type, structure and nutrient levels influence rotation design and follow this up by using the nutrient budgeting technique to establish whether the rotation is sustainable in the long term. We then look at using manures and changes to the design to make it sustainable. The second unique feature is that we keep group numbers very small, a maximum of around 8-10 to encourage discussion and allow everyone to ask questions about their particular situation.

We welcome those considering or just starting conversion as well as established organic farmers. Indeed, the most successful courses have consisted of a mix of these. There is something for all. Most farmers attending have subsequently modified their farming practices to incorporate some of the ideas picked up during the course.

Each day starts at 10:30 am (coffee/tea are served from 10:00 am) finishing at around 4:00-4:30 pm depending on the level of discussion. Lunch is provided.

For more information or to book call 0117 987 4587 or 0117 914 2400. The Modules are all £58.75 (£50 + VAT) if people book one or two, or £51.70 (£44 + VAT) if they book 3 or more.
